THE MODELLING SYSTEM
FORAIR - IT modeling system provides on daily basis forecast up to 3 days. The system runs on European domain at 20 km resolution and on Italian domain at 4 km resolution using two-way nesting approach. The modeling chain downloads GFS meteorological forecast from NCEP (U.S. meteorological system); NCEP fields are used to feed RAMS (Cotton et al., 2003) prognostic meteorological model. SURFPRO (Finardi et al., 2005) computes the turbulent parameters from RAMS model output. Chemical boundary conditions are retrieved by Copernicus Atmospheric Service (CAMS, http://atmosphere.copernicus.eu
). The emission inventory has been provided by ISPRA (National Emission Inventory
), for the Italian domain, and by CAMS (global and regional emissions, April 2019 version
), for the European domain. The software EMMA (Arianet, 2006) disaggregates in space and time the anthropogenic emissions for all the pollutants taken into account by SAPRC99 chemical scheme. Natural emission are computed using SURFPRO software. Eventually the chemical transport model FARM (Silibello et al. 2008) estimates concentrations using SAPRC-99 gas-phase scheme coupled with aero3 module. The thermodynamic equilibrium between gas and aerosol phases of condensable inorganic and organic species are based on ISOROPIA model (Fountoukis et al., 2007; Nenes et al.,1998) and SORGAM model (Shell et al. 2001) respectively.
